Review

Romantic Orchestral Masterpieces features two full-length CDs of the best from the Romantic Era, a century of music filled with melody as much as emotion. It is a cross section of composers, time periods and nationalities. Disc one opens with the Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream — a startling work considering Mendelssohn was just 16 years old when he wrote it. Other early Romantic composers follow, including the high-speed "Roman Carnival Overture" by Berlioz, a stand-alone overture intended for concert performance, made up of material and themes from Berlioz' opera Benvenuto Cellini. Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields perform "Peer Gynt" Suite No. 2, which includes the doleful "Solveig's Song" by Grieg. Smetana's tone poem "Die Moldau" makes for a stirring ending, with its famous theme (a version which was adapted as the National Anthem of Israel). Disc two opens with the Prelude to Act I of Lohengrin by Wagner. Its shimmering strings present a surreal world of fantasy and legend. The popular and delightful "Humoreske" by Dvorák and the "Waltz of the Flowers" by Tchaikovsky take their turn. The final track is the Adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony, arguably Mahler's most famous single piece of music. Beyond the concert stage, it was notable for its appearance in the 1971 film Death in Venice.

"Iona Brown personified the essence of the Academy's style of music-making. She displayed a fastidious elegance that observed the performing conventions of the 18th century without letting the music dry out." —Sir Neville Marriner

The two-CD package is complimented by an album of popular music from the Baroque as well as one from Mozart — "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik." Performed by the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with Iona Brown at the helm, the CD also includes such "standards" as the Pachelbel "Canon" and the Albinoni Adagio in G minor and Bach's "Air on a G-string." There are also two from Handel — the Largo "Ombra mai fu" and "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" as well as other famous works. The recording sound and balance is admirable. Combined, the two create a wonderful introduction to classical music.
