C.P.E. Bach: The Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 7

Last year, the Society issued the first five volumes in a series of recordings that will collectively produce the Complete Keyboard Sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Keyboard specialist Miklos Spanyi has been the driving force behind this project, producing thus far a marvelous introduction to these often overlooked sonatas.

The five sonatas included on Volume 7 all appear to have been favorites among 18th-century keyboardists, given the incredible number of times they appear in 18th-century manuscripts. Bach composed all of these works during a period in which all of his music, even fast movements, conveyed a pronounced lyrical mood. Recorded in a tiny suburb in Finland, Spanyi's clavichord yields a clear and powerful sound on these fine works.

Spanyi, a prize-winning harpsichordist, is a first-rate interpreter of these works by C.P.E. Bach. And his dedication to the composer's true vision for his music is further evidenced by the fact that this entire series is being performed on a modern clavichord, modeled after the instruments of Bach's day. As with the previous five discs in the series, the clavichord's sound in the hands of Miklos Spanyi is an event unto itself and will leave listeners clamoring for more. The rest of the series is highly anticipated.
