The conductor Dennis Russell Davies is one of the leading interpreters of American music on the scene today. His performances of important American symphonies and operas have been praised not only in this country but in Europe where Davies has had a distinguished career in cities such as Bonn and Vienna. Fortunately for the Members of the Musical Heritage Society, Davies has made many of his best recordings exclusively for the Society. His recording of Copland's Appalachian Spring (MHS #5169820) and a disc of Copland's Music for the Movies and the Theater (MHS #5169811) have been Best Sellers since they were first released. This third Copland disc should soon join these others as a favorite of our Members.
Dance Panels, composed in 1959 for the great choreographer Jerome Robbins, is a Suite of seven beautiful movements each composed in a unique style. The music is composed in a simple and direct mode that evokes the wonderful American idiom that Copland owned. Davies' interpretation is simply beautiful.
The Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson, sung superbly here by the mezzo-soprano Helene Schneiderman, are musical poetry, the ideal combination of the creative spirit of two of America's finest artists. The disc ends with Copland's Short Symphony, a major work composed in 1933. This is a work that shows another side of Copland's genius; conductors as great as Stokowski and Koussevitzky shied away from its rhythmic challenges, but Davies and the talented members of the Orchestra of St. Luke's handle these hurdles perfectly. With its rich sound, this is an exclusive recording every Member should own.
