Enrique Granados (1867-1916) is one of those composers whose popularity is defined predominantly by one work: "Goyescas." However, Granados also composed the wonderful "Danzas Espanolas" and an opera Maria del Carmen. During the period between 1895 and 1910, Granados worked on some large scale symphonic works, and this exciting CD will introduce you to some exceptional music.
The symphonic poem, "Dante" is a two-movement work with its roots firmly planted in the Wagnerian harmonies. Premiered in New York in 1915 this is an extraordinary discovery. You will also hear elements of Ravel and Debussy in this lush orchestral music and you will find yet another worthy work inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy.
Five Pieces Based on Popular Spanish Songs in an idiomatic arrangement by Ferrer, occupies the middle of the recording. The Iberian flavor and rhythms are absolutely infectious.
The album rounds out with a wonderful version of "La Maja Y El Ruisenor" and an Intermezzo from "Goyescas."
Adrian Leaper and the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria give these pieces evocative performances.
It's great to find new pieces that help expand the listening experience in the realm of Romantic orchestral music, and this CD does just that.
