The works contained on this CD were, in fact, George Frideric Handel's second attempt at composing music for the concerti grossi genre. More interesting, perhaps, is the fact that Handel only started composing these works after two contemporary rivals - Bononcini and Geminiani - had already produced their own successful series of concertos. And yet, these four works represent some of the most powerful music from the entire Baroque era.
Handel was famous for churning out some of his most impressive musical accomplishments over the course of just a few weeks. These four concerti grossi are no exception - Handel completed them in just six weeks. No great music has been more derivative, the musicologist Basil Lam once wrote, yet none bears more firmly the impression of personality [than Handel's]. Modeled after the formula established by Corelli (who is credited with establishing the concerto's definitive form), these works nevertheless evoke a feeling of vibrancy, freshness and flexibility - Handel's own mark on the genre.
There exist several other recordings of these concerti grossi with fine performances by some great orchestras and conductors. But we have chosen this disc to offer Society members because of the sensitive and insightful leadership of conductor Iona Brown. On this recording, with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields performing on modern instruments, Handel's true genius shines through better than on any other disc we have heard. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which spearheaded the 1950's Baroque revival, is the perfect ensemble to record these seminal works.
