The soprano Angela Gheorgiu has quickly become one of the most sought after opera stars in the world. Throughout the major music capitals of Europe and the United States, she has thrilled audiences with her portrayals of opera's best-known heroines. Her appearances are highly anticipated events that draw large, enthusiastic crowds as is evidenced by this New Release of a Gheorgiu concert.
Recorded live at London's Covent Garden, this is a wide-ranging album of soprano arias. The disc opens with an unusual choice: an aria from Handel's Rinaldo, but when you hear Gheorgiu float the gentle Baroque phrases, you'll immediately understand why she has included this rarity.
There are arias by Mozart, Massenet and Charpentier followed by a wonderful set of Italian arias by Puccini, Cilea and Bellini. Her interpretation of "Un bel dì" from Madama Butterfly is absolutely thrilling and the audience reaction attests to how exciting it must have been in the theater.
There are three encores including a lively, fun rendition of "I could have danced all night" from My Fair Lady.
Ion Marin and the members of the Royal Opera House Orchestra provide excellent, supple accompaniment for this star who is still in the early phase of her career.
