Luigi Cherubini was far more than another fine composer who was overshadowed by the classical greats: Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert. Born just four years after Mozart, Cherubini was a critical creator and innovator who served as composer to the Court of King George III of England and was named to the Institut Francais by King Louis XVIII.
Cherubini's string quartets in sonically and technically brilliant performances by the Quartetto David are not "also-rans" compared to the seminal quartets of Beethoven, Haydn or Mozart. Rather, these terrifically exciting works are equal to their contemporaries. There is passion and romanticism that grows out of the classical style. The members of the Quartetto David clearly own these works. They play through them with incredible verve and excitement and the sonics of the recording allow the interplay of the instruments to come through clearly.
As with the Mendelssohn Quartets previously issued by the Society (MHS #5366492) these Cherubini Quartets will surely become Society favorites.
