This recording features major works that guitarist Alirio Diaz has collected and designated as masterpieces. They are all tremendously virtuosic to play, challenging the limits and boundaries of the guitar. When listening to this recording it is sometimes hard to believe the beautiful sounds emanate from a single performer on a single guitar.
The tremendous transcriptions of Albéniz are full of the fire and Spanish melodies that make the original works for piano so compelling. One of the most interesting things about these transcriptions is that they were written by a Spanish composer who tried to capture the magic of the Spanish guitar on the piano (which he did) and that also sounded totally natural on the instrument that he was attempting to imitate. Unfortunately for the performer, as natural and beautiful as they sound on the instrument, they are seriously difficult to play, much less play with the effortless facility Diaz displays here. There are only a few guitarists who could perform these works and even fewer who could perform them as beautifully as they are performed here.
