Claudio Monteverdi was the consummate composer, a man of the church, who used his skill not only to advance opera during its infancy, but to glorify religion with sacred music that was sheer inspiration.
Monteverdi's Madrigals of Love is one of the most beautiful "song cycles" ever composed. This collection, using the simplest of musical idioms captures all of the emotions of love: anguish, excitement, heartache, passion and so many more. The singers of Cantus Cölln led by Konrad Junghänel give inspired readings of these madrigals. They bring out the more youthful, playful aspects and make what is too often sad and serious simply delightful.
