Read About This Recording

Few musicians have attained the popularity and fame that the flutist James Galway has achieved during his extraordinary career. With frequent appearances on television, Galway popularized the flute beyond all expectations. But beneath the surface of James Galway the charming, glib Man with the Golden Flute, lies a musician of extraordinary talent and intensity.

Mozart composed only three works for solo flute and all three are featured on this disc. The two Concertos for Flute and Orchestra are gems. Mozart’s graceful melodies require a flutist who can make his instrument sing and Galway makes his golden flute sing as sweetly as any I’ve ever heard. However, the hidden gem on this disc is the Concerto for Flute and Harp in which Marisa Robles plays the wonderful harp solo. The combination of these two instruments, along with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields led by Sir Neville Marriner, is "ear candy" — sweet and very easy to listen to.

In Galway’s talented hands, every work sounds marvelous and will be an integral part of any collection.

Quotes

"Galway's technique is still razor-sharp. His trademark tone, big and luscious, flows with incredible ease and evenness throughout the instrument's compass." —The Seattle Times
