This collection presents a sequence of music for Lent, Passiontide and Easter by a group of composers that spans four and a half centuries and that is pretty equally divided between the known and the unknown. Orlando Gibbons, Felix Mendelssohn, Anton Bruckner and Benjamin Britten share the honors with Richard Farrant (?1525-1580), Peter Philips (ca. 1561-1628), Sir Edward Bairstow (1874-1946), Charles Wood (1886-1926) and Brian Chapple (b. 1945). Simple elemental fervor is the quality they all share. Their common message transcends time and place, and what emerges from this gathering of voices is a telling and moving journey through perhaps the most dramatic part of the liturgical year.
This recording captures the resonances of its cathedral setting-one can almost smell the incense as it mingles with the fragrances of spring flowers. The vocalism by the Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral under the direction of John Scott is distinguished by its open-faced innocence-no misplaced operatic gymnastics here, just unadorned expressions of faith.
Gramophone cites, among this recording's other virtues, the singing of the four treble soloists, especially that of Connor Burrowes, who is heard twice in the Lenten section and then finally in Britten's Te Deum where the precision and clarity of his tone are ideal.
My advice: Acquire this disc, and go immediately to the third track-Mendelssohn's I Waited for the Lord. You will be hooked, guaranteed. If you are unfamiliar with this kind of music, you will be immersed in a new world-a world you will find yourself powerless to leave.
