Released now in honor of the Shostakovich anniversary year, we include what may be one of the most beautiful recordings of the Shostakovich piano trio, paired with the gorgeous Tchaikovsky trio. Besides the repertoire, Deutsche Grammophon created one of the classics of chamber music recordings when they paired Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky for this performance.

The Shostakovich is a dark and powerful work and many will be haunted by the spectacular finale which includes several Jewish themes. The Tchaikovsky is one of his most dramatic and brooding works and is given heart-wrenching performances by this trio.

While I hate to throw anything out that may make some people run from this recording, it is a live recording. That being said, its sound is spectacular and the energy from these three is really remarkable — they play as if they have been working together for a lifetime.
