Another volume in Decca's lifestyle classical music series, For a Quiet Evening collects introspective classical guitar pieces, including Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasilieras No. 5," Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess," and Bach's "Arioso From Cantata BWV 156." The album mixes more contemporary compositions, such as Stanley Myers' "Cavatina From the Deer Hunter," with older ones, such as the traditional piece "Romance D'Amour." The compositions of {Fauré} and Bach are well-represented on For a Quiet Evening, with "Sicilienne From Pelleas et Meslisande" and "After a Dream" from the former and "Courante From Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major" and "Prelude From Suite No. 4 in E Major" from the latter, helping to give the collection its dreamy, reflective feel. Vivaldi's "Largo From Guitar Concerto in D Major," Paganini's "Caprice, Op. 1 No. 24," and {Joaquín Rodrigo}'s "Concierto de Aranjuez" are some of the album's other highlights. While this collection is indeed perfect For a Quiet Evening, its gentle but intricate music is also apt for any other time of day. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
For a Quiet Evening collects introspective classical guitar works — not only classic guitar pieces like "Concierto di Aranjuez" by Rodrigo and Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D, but also beautiful arrangements of such well-known works as Fauré's Pavane and Bach's Arioso. While this collection is indeed perfect for a quiet evening, its gentle but intricate music is also apt for any other time of day.
